Thanks to the generosity and hard work of the Jazz Society of Oregon, and assistance from Jazz Radio 89.1 KMHD, and PDX Jazz, the 34th annual St. Johns neighborhood block party known to the rest of the world as the Cathedral Park Jazz Festival will take place this coming Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 18 through 20.
The Cathedral Park Jazz Festival is 34 years old in 2014. This is the oldest continuous free jazz festival west of the Mississippi River and we are proud of that. While the organization which produced the Cathedral Park Jazz Festival for the past two years has dissolved, ownership of the festival has been turned over to the Jazz Society of Oregon. This is an exciting opportunity for JSO. Our mission includes supporting jazz performance. We are currently seeking sponsors to help finance the festival this year and we are gratified by the support we are receiving in this endeavor. Local businesses and community organizations are strongly behind it. PDX Jazz and KMHD have offered to partner with making this happen. Key individuals involved in producing recent festivals have come forward to help make it happen again. Contact us at info@jsojazzscene.org to let us know how you can help, and stay tuned to this website for updates on the festival.
As always, the music will be on the concrete stage located at the east (uphill) end of Cathedral Park. The area is a beautiful setting and is located almost directly beneath the historic St. Johns Bridge.
